From Purpose to Power

Common Purpose is becoming Common Power as a reflection of our work, and our belief in the power of the vote that all of us should be able to exercise. Our name is changing but the work is staying the same. We still mobilize volunteers for voters around the country, while investing in the next generation of leaders and building lasting community.

In summary, we’re becoming Common Power for these reasons and more:

  • Common Power references the power of the vote. We work to introduce, encourage, protect and win back that power all over the country. Voting is the most common power in America.

  • Purpose was what drove us to begin this work. Power is what we help the organizations and communities we serve to obtain. It’s what’s needed to change laws to benefit more people in this country.

  • We own and more fully control the Common Power name. It is unique to our organization, our community, and our work.

A core piece of our “Mojo”, the story of our name change is best understood hearing directly from our next generation leaders and members of our community. This video shows what Common Power means to them.

Below is a more in-depth look at our path from inception in 2018 to our name change today. Questions? Email us at hello@cpnow.org.

In 2018 we launched Common Purpose as an all-volunteer initiative. In 2019 we became a full-fledged organization and we hired a core group of people in leadership positions. In the first six months of 2020, in response to COVID-19 we executed a hard pivot to significantly elevate our remote civic engagement.

Common Power includes a Political Action Committee (PAC) and Super Political Action Committee registered with the Federal Election Commission, and a fiscally sponsored 501c3 program.
