A Taste of Action Academy | Five Decades of Attack On The Voting Rights Act

Join us on zoom for the final event of Action Academy April! Pouya Souri, Action Academy alum and currently a Common Power Fieldwork Associate, will present his year-long research project focused on political conservatives’ plans to destroy the crowning jewel – Section 5 – of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. The John Roberts Court in 2013 accomplished this mission, and Pouya will take us through 5 decades of attempts and strategy to get this done. He will finish by providing thoughts about parallels with abortion rights and the importance of CP’s mission.

Action Academy Director Larcy Douglas will provide a final update on the Summer 2024 Academy cohort, and Action Academy alum and CP Development Associate Jordyn Schulte will share information about the status – hopefully resounding success! – of our month-long funding campaign.

WA Weekends Of Action Virtual Kick-Off !

Please join us for our virtual WA Weekends of Action Kick-Off!

Come to this kick-off if you are excited and eager to learn about the campaigns and partners we will be doing work with this year. Our voter engagement efforts (door-knocking and voter registration) will be focused in a few different areas and districts of Washington this year and each area will feel and look different in how we approach our work there.

During our virtual kick-off, we will provide a deep-dive of all the candidates and partners we are planning on supporting, and tell you why, how, and the timeline of when each effort will be launched. Good to note, that we are currently prioritizing primary efforts in Vancouver, WA for Maria Gluesenkamp, Yakima Valley for a State House and State Senate seat + a Ballot initiative in Kent!

We hope to see you there!

Volunteer Training 201: Building (a Just and Inclusive) Community

This highly interactive two-part workshop aims to support Common Power volunteers in navigating diverse spaces and interpersonal dynamics with fellow volunteers and potential voters. The workshop’s content, activities, and exercises engage participants in reflection and mindfulness around identity, power, privilege, positionality, and bias.

Session one: Tuesday, May 7th

we deepen our understanding of the history of institutionalized racism; we examine how federal practices of the New Deal shaped and continue to impact the neighborhoods in our communities, reflecting on the ways these socioeconomic barriers have furthered inequities, and interrogate the ‘traditional narratives’ which bypass this history.

Session two: Wednesday, May 8th

We’ll laser-focus on power, privilege, and identity, further discussing how macro-sources of socialization impact our biases, assumptions, and ultimately, our ability to connect across differences. Interwoven throughout both sessions are methods of community-building, including equalizing communication practices that support connection, understanding, and solidarity. Come ready to engage!

Foundational Course: Practicing Democracy: Women’s Political Activism in the Progressive Era - Lecture Three

Foundational Course: Practicing Democracy: Women’s Political Activism in the Progressive Era - Lecture Three

Speaker: Dr. Cathleen Cahill

Meeting Dates: Mondays, March 11th, 18th, 25th

Meeting Time: 5:00 pm PST - 6:30 pm PST

This foundational course explores women’s political activity and strategies. Women in US history have always been politically engaged, though the forms of their activism have varied throughout time.

In this class, we primarily focus on women in the Progressive Era, a period spanning the 1890s through WWI. Historians often describe it as a moment of modernization in which Americans confronted issues that remain with us today such as racism and segregation, labor activism, immigration agitation, environmental conservation, and calls for sexual equality.

With a focus on a group of diverse women, we will explore their creative and powerful efforts to address these issues and change their world. In doing so, we will consider what motivated them to become active. What kinds of resistance they faced. How they overcome obstacles. And how they strategically fought for what they believed in. Although we will focus on individual stories, they were not exceptional, but representative of many other women who fought for equality, dignity, and justice. Their stories are inspiring for today's activists and lessons to be learned from as well.
